LEWISTON — A former social studies teacher and dean of students is now interim assistant principal at Lewiston High School.
Jay Dufour’s position was approved by the Lewiston School Committee on Monday.
Lewiston High School Principal Linda MacKenzie praised Dufour as someone who has taken on many leadership roles at the high school, most recently as dean of students.
Along with science teacher Ronda Fournier, Dufour started working as a dean last February. The goal was to work with students, improve student behavior “and make this school a better place,” Dufour said last winter.
An assistant principal is needed to replace Beth Bradley, who resigned recently. Bradley wanted to return to the classroom to teach math, and accepted a teaching job in a district nearer to where she lives, Superintendent Bill Webster said.
After Bradley resigned, “we interviewed a few candidates. Mr. Dufour rose to the top,” MacKenzie told the School Committee. There will be a full search to replace Bradley in the spring, she said.
She will also look for a new dean.
The committee voted unanimously for Dufour, who thanked members for the opportunity, adding he was stunned by the promotion. “I didn’t expect this to happen,” he said. Bradley is leaving big shoes to fill, Dufour said. “Hopefully, I can rise to the occasion and do the very best I can for Lewiston High School.”
Lewiston High School has one principal and three assistant principals: Dufour, Donald Ferrara and JoAnne Dowd. Enrollment numbers from Sept. 3 show the student population at 1,293.
