NORWAY — Everyone is welcome to celebrate the harvest at the Alan Day Community Garden with a free Garden to Gourmet workshop with Anna Sysko and Kim Hamlin from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Sept. 14, and a Food Forest workshop with Scott Vlaun from 2 to 4 p.m.
At noon all are invited to a Harvest Party potluck (bring something to share) to meet neighbors and people interested in the mission of the Alan Day Community Garden: to cooperatively create a demonstration, education garden, where people can grow their own food using sustainable organic methods supporting an enduring community food system.
It’s a mouthful and the group is committed to providing garden beds at low or no cost to anyone who wants to grow food, helping people to grow food or work in exchange for food, educating young people and adults through its youth leadership program, garden tours and free workshops demonstrating different ways to interact with the land in respectful ways.
The garden is set up to catch water off the roof, has a small solar array to pump water from a dug well, provides a compost for the neighborhood, has a greenhouse with the Rowe school and is a harvest for hunger site. This is a community garden cooperatively created by hundreds of local volunteers who have shared their ideas, time, energy, work and resources to bring about the Alan Day Community Garden.
