CAPE ELIZABETH — Cape Elizabeth football’s flair for the dramatic continues.

One of the heroes in an improbable win at Leavitt one week ago, Ben Ekedahl, booted a 25-yard field goal with five seconds remaining in regulation Friday to give Cape a 32-29 Class C West win over relentless Poland at Hannaford Field.

Poland (1-1) scored 29 unanswered points after Cape senior quarterback Noah Wolfinger left the game with an injury. But the Knights fumbled a punt and Cape recovered at the 16 in the closing seconds to set up the Ekedahl game-winner.

Adam Mocciola’s 80-yard touchdown run put Poland on the board midway through the third quarter.

Will Bernier (43 yards) and Robbie Porter (20 yards) scored to continue the comeback, and a touchdown and extra point tied it with 1:01 to go in the fourth.

Cape (2-0) scored three times in the opening quarter before Wolfinger hurt his left knee.

FAIRFIELD — Mitchell Cushing rushed for four touchdowns Friday night, leading Lawrence to a decisive 45-22 Class B East victory over Mt. Blue at Keyes Field.

J.T. Williams had touchdown runs of 80 and 30 yards for Mt. Blue (1-1). Williams’ first score gave the Cougars a 14-7 lead, but the Bulldogs (2-0) answered with three consecutive touchdowns before the half.

Ryan Pratt also ran for a 40-yard TD for Mt. Blue. Cody Martin’s long interception return set up one Cushing touchdown. Walker Thomas returned a punt for a Lawrence score.

OOB 27, Winthrop/Monmouth 8

Matt Ingram threw the TD pass to Dakota Carter. Zack Phinney rushed for the PAT and the 8-7 advantage for the Ramblers (0-2), who took advantage of two OOB first-half fumbles.

Andrew Graves rushed for a score that put OOB (2-0) back in front to stay. Bryan Roberts added a pair of scores, the second a TD toss by Eric Hogan.

Windham 45, Edward Little 7

WINDHAM — Matt Verrill’s 80-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Blanchard was the bright spot Friday night in Edward Little’s 45-7 Class A East football loss to Windham.

Verrill and starting tailback Hunter Martin later left the game with injuries on a rough night for the Eddies (0-2), who lost here 54-14 in the 2013 regional quarterfinals.

Windham scored four unanswered touchdowns to open the game, then answered the long EL touchdown with a drive and a field goal to regain its momentum.

Sanford 27, Oxford Hills 18

SANFORD — Sanford moved the ball effectively through the air Friday night, building a big early lead en route to a 27-18 victory over Oxford Hills in a Class A crossover game at Hill Stadium.

The Spartans (2-0) led 21-6 at the half and 27-6 after the third quarter before the Vikings (1-1) closed the gap with two late touchdowns.

Davis Turner chalked up two TDs and Malik Geiger supplied the other score for Oxford Hills, which was missing starting quarterback and defensive back Brady LaFrance after a game disqualification in a season-opener against Lewiston.
