MINOT — Selectmen on Monday discussed events scheduled for Community Day, which begins at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, with a 5K run.

The run starts at the new athletic fields behind the Minot Consolidated School and proceeds along the network of walking trails. Fire Chief Dean Campbell told the board that the Fire Department will sell doughnuts and coffee to the early risers.

“Community Day has been growing a bit every year; it’s more than the Fire Department putting on something now,” Campbell said. “We’ll do better on the planning.”

The Fire Department will have its usual display, the Community Club will offer children’s games, the Minot-Hebron Athletic Association will hold a one-pitch softball tourney and the Minot Historical Society will host a lunch.

“And there’ll be a pie-eating contest — chocolate cream pie,” Selectman Eda Tripp said.

Most of the action will take place between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

In other business, selectmen awarded the contract for winter sand to Washburn & Son Excavating of Minot for $5 per ton delivered. Washburn & Son gave the lowest of two bids.

Town Administrator Arlan Saunders told selectmen he has received a quote from American Concrete Industries and expects he may hear from another firm on a box culvert for Goodwin Road. The culvert’s dimensions are 40 feet by 5 feet by 15 feet.

Saunders said he informed the firms that town officials are trying to get an idea of what it might cost, preliminary to putting the project on the agenda for the annual town meeting scheduled for next March.

Selectmen also asked Saunders to prepare a letter in their name to be sent to the West Minot Grange, thanking the grange for purchasing and installing a new sign at Riverside Cemetery.

Saunders said the original deal was the grange would buy the sign and the town highway crew would install it; however, a grange member had a new post hole auger drill he wanted to try out.

“And a fine job he did,” Saunders said.

Highway Supervisor Scott Parker reported that ditching on Death Valley Road is done, and his crew will do shoulder work on town roads that were paved this summer. They include Marston Hill Road and Mountain View Drive.

Saunders also reported that the painting of center strips on town roads will take place on Wednesday. It had been scheduled for Monday but was postponed because of equipment problems.
