1932 – 2014

Auburn— George David “Mac” McDonald, 81, of Poland, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died Friday, Sept. 12, quickly and peacefully at the Hospice House in Auburn, with his wife, Faye, of almost 20 years, and children at his bedside.

He was born Nov. 16, 1932, at the Old Farm House in Wales, the son of the late George and Beatrice (Polly) McDonald. Mac was in the U.S. Air Force, worked as a civilian cook at Pease Air Force Base dining hall and hospital, and worked at J.M. Fields Supermarket; he retired at the age of 55.

While in the Air Force, he met Doreen, to whom he was married for 40 years, before her death in 1992. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home, and was a “snowbird,” traveling between Maine and Florida following the warm weather. He enjoyed camping, canoe trips on the Saco River, snowmobiling and country music.

He put in countless years of hard work establishing Mac’s Camping Area, which became a source of many friends and a place where family came to gather every weekend. Here, he could be seen zipping around in his golf cart, making sure everyone was working hard, and also enjoyed his Sunday morning rituals with his brother, Lawrence, for a ride around the lake.

He is survived by his wife, Faye (Bumpus) McDonald; his son, Blaine R. McDonald and his wife, Joan (Tucci) McDonald, and their children, Shaine and Wade; his daughter, Linda Harnden and her husband, Douglas, and their children, Nicholas and Nathan; his daughter, Janice Guilmette, her boyfriend, Kevin McIntire; his granddaughter, Carrie Cornett and her husband, Ian; his stepdaughters, Wanda James and her husband, Bobby, Kim Ayotte and her husband, Dean, Candy Mezziani and her husband, Kader; his stepsons, Gary Bumpus, and his wife, Beth, Randy Bumpus and his wife, Kendra; 15 stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; his sisters, Pearl Moody, Joan Huff and Pauline Morris; his brother, Lawrence McDonald and his wife, Louella; his brother, Winfield McDonald, and his wife, Pauline; his brother, Kenneth; his sister-in-law, Sheila (Chick) McDonald; and many nieces and nephews.
