DURHAM — Sparks from a riding lawnmower ignited hay in a barn at 7 David Road on Wednesday afternoon, fire Chief Bill St. Michel said.

There were no injuries. Damage was estimated at about $2,000, he said.

St. Michel said apparently sparks from starting the mower with a battery charger got onto loose hay. The mower was outside the barn when smoke was seen coming from inside, he said.

Property owner Betty Breton was advised to have an electrician check the wiring.

A pumper and tanker from the Lisbon Fire Department responded to the scene, and the New Gloucester Fire Department filled in at the Durham station.
