If you’re lucky, you’ve never had to look for an auto glass service provider. Aside from a few dings or cracks, most of us have never had to deal with windshield repairs much less have one replaced. Accidents happen, though, and there may come a time when you have to replace your vehicle’s windshield. In order to do that, you will need to find a reliable glass service provider.
When it comes to selecting a glass service provider, cost should not be the deciding factor. While it pays to shop around and compare costs, it is best to go with someone who has a good reputation. Next to seatbelts and air bags, the windshield is one of the most important safety features in a vehicle. A windshield provides valuable structural support and crush resistance. When it is replaced improperly, the protection it affords occupants is compromised and lives are at stake.
While there are laws regarding the use and replacement of seatbelts and air bags, there are no laws regarding the replacement of windshields. That’s why it is important to use a quality glass service provider. When selecting a provider, find out if their technicians are certified by the National Glass Association and if they support the Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard and use the urethane adhesives recommended by the manufacturer.
Once you have selected a glass service provider, pay attention to the technician’s work. During installation, the technician should first check for a passenger side air bag. This will determine the type of urethane they should use. The technician should then remove the old sealant, leaving a 1/16″ bonding surface, and clean and prime the glass and the area where it will be set on the vehicle and make the replacement. Throughout the process, the technician should wear gloves to avoid contaminating the bonding surfaces, and afterwards, they should go over the dos and don’ts of post-installation usage with you. If the technician fails to do any of these steps, don’t hesitate to speak up.
After the installation, be sure to check the technician’s work. Make sure the windshield is perfectly centered, the molding is flat and fits securely around the windshield, and the glass is flush to the vehicle’s body. If you find fault with the technician’s work, tell them. Remember, a faulty windshield will only cause you trouble later and compromise your and your passengers’ safety.
It pays to be particular when choosing a glass service provider. Ask around, do your homework and make certain that the one you hire does a good job! Lives depend on it!
