A year-old proposal to build an arena for the Pettengill Park ice rink was boosted Monday when Auburn city councilors called for a meeting of supporters and municipal officials to develop a final round of cost estimates for the project. The proposal developed by a committee of the Auburn Youth Hockey Association includes constructing an arena over the existing ice rink behind Hasty Community Center at a cost of $750,000. The city-owned ice arena would be used for games and practices by the association’s 175 players, Edward Little High School hockey teams, private groups and public skating sessions. The proposal calls for offsetting construction and operating costs with fees of at least $100 per hour. Those funds are expected to pay for the project within 20 years, said John Vachon, president of the youth league and chairman of the group’s rink committee.
