SABATTUS — Those who wish to go after one of three vacant seats on the Board of Selectmen need to act soon.

Two resignations and one expiring term has left the board with three openings: a one-year term, a two-year term and a three-year term.

“It’s a unique situation,” Town Manager Andrew Gilmore said.

Selectman Paul Gagne resigned in June, leaving a one-year term open. Former fire Chief Don Therrien resigned Wednesday, leaving his two-year term up for grabs. And come November, Jim Wood will have served his three-year term.

According to Gilmore, the Town Charter requires those who wish to get their names on the ballot to have their paperwork in by Monday. The paperwork must include the signatures of 25 registered voters from Sabattus.

Gagne retired at the start of summer after a move to Lewiston rendered him ineligible for a place on the board.

Therrien’s relationship with the board was more tumultuous. In late 2013, there was talk that Therrien might sue the town after he was forced to resign from the Fire Department amid reports of payroll irregularities. Ultimately, no money was found to be missing. In response, Therrien hired an lawyer, saying the allegations had caused economic distress and harm to his reputation.

Therrien did not return messages left at his home Thursday.
