MEXICO — The Mexico Planning Board will discuss possible amendments to its animal control ordinance and a proposal to turn a section of the recreation park into a campground.

During the board’s July 31 meeting, Animal Control Officer Anne Simmons-Edmunds reviewed the town’s animal control ordinance and suggested changes to certain sections.

Much of the discussion centered around whether the town should increase fees for residents with nuisance dogs, and whether all dog owners should walk their dogs on a leash, regardless of the dog’s temperament.

The Planning Board agreed to take an in-depth look at the ordinance at its next meeting.

The board will also continue discussion of turning a section of the Mexico Recreation Park into a campground in an effort to drum up additional revenue for the town.

Arthur MacIsaac, who works at the River Valley Recreation Center, told board members that the proposal was “in its infancy stages” and that he hoped they would “give it a chance.”

MacIsaac added that the initial plan was to have eight to 10 sites with power and eight to 10 sites without power.

Selectman Reggie Arsenault said during the board’s July 31 meeting that he was worried about people staying overnight at the park who were smoking, drinking and being loud.
