CAMDEN (AP) — A Camden-based charity has filed a lawsuit against its former president, seeking the return of $3.8 million he allegedly embezzled from the nonprofit, all-volunteer organization.

The suit filed last week by United Mid-Coast Charities alleges Russell Brace while president from 1997 until 2014 took checks intended for the charity and deposited them into personal bank accounts. The suit says one of the checks was for $200,000.

The allegations of misappropriated donations came to light when new president Stephen Crane took over in August. Crane says everyone at the charity is “shocked.

The charity supports children’s services, medical care, community services and educational programs in Waldo and Knox counties.

Crane says law enforcement is investigating, but no criminal charges have been filed.

Neither Brace nor his lawyer returned messages left early Tuesday.
