FARMINGTON — A domestic-related standoff was diffused peacefully Monday afternoon when police responded to a third-party report of a 23-year-old man threatening suicide with a rifle on Clover Mill Road, police Chief Jack Peck said.

Farmington police, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and members of the Maine State Police Tactical Team responded to the situation that began about noon, he said.

Peck had police and deputies set up perimeters around the area. Peck made a call to the suicidal person and talked to him. He was able to negotiate with the man to come out and talk to him and a mental health counselor, he said.

Once the person was taken into protective custody, police searched the residence, Peck said.

An unloaded rifle was found in the residence.

The man was taken to Farmington Police Station and met with mental health counselors.

Peck said he does not anticipate any charges against the man.
