ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to Alaska in the Kendall Hockey Classic on Saturday night in Anchorage, Alaska. The Black Bears got goals from Blaine Byron(Manotick, Ontario) and Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) in the game.

Maine falls to 0-2-0 on the young season, while Alaska improves to 2-0-0.

Maine opened the scoring at 9:43 of the first period on an odd-man rush. Byron beat Nanook goalie Davis Jones for his first goal of the season. Cam Brown (Natick, Massachusetts) and Conor Riley (Massena, New York) each assisted on the goal.

Alaska Fairbanks answered less than two minutes later with a pair of goals just 1:08 apart. Peter Krieger beat Maine goalie Sean Romeo (Cary, North Carolina) at 11:01, while Josh Atkinson gave the Nanooks the lead at 12:08 with his first goal of the season.

After a scoreless second period, the Nanooks added a pair of quick goals to start the third period. Garrick Perry had a breakaway early in the frame which Maine goalie Romeo stopped, but Colton Sparrow was on the doorstep and scored on the rebound at 1:39. UAF made it a 4-1 lead at 4:02 when Atkinson found Alec Hajdukovic on the far post and he redirected the puck into the goal.

Maine cut the lead to 4-2 at 17:03 when Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) scored as he was falling to the ice. Brown picked up his second assist of the night on the goal.

Alaska added an empty net goal by Brandon Morley at 18:54 to give the Nanooks the 5-2 win.

Alaska finished the game with a 22-21 edge in shots on goal. Maine was scoreless in four power play chances, while Alaska finished 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

Maine goalie Sean Romeo made his collegiate debut in the game and stopped 17 shots. He falls to 0-1-0 on the season. Davis Jones made 19 saves in goal for the Nanooks and improves to 2-0-0 on the campaign.
