LUDLOW — A Ludlow man is dead after a a state police-involved shooting Sunday afternoon, Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a written statement late Sunday evening.
State troopers had gone to the home of Alan Gillotti Sr., 52, on Smyrna Townline Road on Sunday to investigate an armed home invasion that occurred in Bridgewater earlier that day, according to McCausland.
Sgt. Joshua Haines responded to the scene and was outside Gillotti’s house when he shot Gillotti.
“As is standard with all police-involved shootings, the Maine Attorney General’s Office is investigating and the trooper has been placed on administrative leave with pay,” McCausland said.
No further information on the shooting was available Sunday night.
Haines is a 14-year veteran of the state police who served as a detective in the Major Crimes Unit for eight years in northern Maine before being promoted in Sept. 2012.
The promotion to sergeant had him overseeing troopers in Troop F in Houlton.
As detective, he was instrumental in the investigation and solving of several major murder cases in Aroostook County, including the death of 57-year-old Jacqueline Shorey, who was beaten and stabbed to death inside a Houlton motel room by 30-year-old Daniel Boles in 2005.
Haines also helped investigate the 2005 murder of Erin Sperrey, 20, of Presque Isle who was beaten to death by Christopher Shumway, 19, at a Tim Horton’s doughnut shop in Caribou.
Just recently, he was one of two state police detectives who investigated the case of Starlette Vining, who was 38 years old when she disappeared in 1998.
In July 2012, State Police arrested George Jaime, 76, and charged him with her murder. He was convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison in Dec. 2013.
