LIVERMORE FALLS – Spruce Mountain stayed healthy, stayed unbeaten and set up another shot at the Campbell Conference regular season title and Class C West top seed with a 67-14 rout of Lake Region at Griffin Field on Friday night.
Matt Vigue rambled for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Phoenix (7-0).
“He was cranking out 40-yard runs like it was his job,” Spruce Mountain coach Walter Polky said.
Spruce Mountain will travel to Leavitt (6-1) with home field advantage in the playoffs on the line next Friday. The Hornets swept the series last season, 25-6 and 48-21 in the playoff rematch, en route to the state title.
The Phoenix looked sharp and ready in their final tuneup.
Dillon Webster added three touchdowns and 130 yards. Peter Theriault passed for a pair of scores.
Deonte Ring had an interception return for a score just before the half.
James Ouellette and Andrew Darling combined for the defensive play of the night.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Polky said. “James stripped the ball out of the kid’s hands and flipped it to Andrew in one motion. It was like he was the big brother looking out for the little brother, saying, ‘Here, you take it.'”
Darling went the 60-yard distance to the end zone.
Spruce scored all 67 points in the first three quarters.
Winthrop/Monmouth 31, Boothbay 8
WINTHROP – Zack Phinney scored three touchdowns in his final senior home game Friday night, leading Winthrop/Monmouth to a 31-8 rout of Boothbay at Maxwell Field.
Phinney scored on runs of 64 and 3 yards as well as a 71-yard punt return for the Ramblers (2-4).
Matt Ingram also connected with Bennett Brooks for two touchdowns through the air, an 18-yarder in the first quarter and one from 10 yards out to make it 19-8 at the half.
The Ramblers’ defense held the Seahawks (2-4) to negative yardage in the second half.
Boothbay put up its points in the first quarter on a 7-yard pass from Nick Burge to Aaron Dickinson. They also hooked up for the two-point conversion.
