BETHEL — The Down Home Maine series will host a program on polarity therapy from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the West Parish Congregational Church.
The series is a free program created and sponsored by the Western Mountains Senior College. It invites creative Mainers to give presentations to community members in an informal setting.
Wednesday’s guest speaker is Emily Ecker, a licensed clinical social worker and a polarity therapist with Therapeutic Massage in Bethel. Ecker said she did a brief workshop for the community in the winter of 2013 and she’s excited to showcase the benefits of polarity therapy to a wider audience.
“It’s usually a mixture of people who have had experience with other types of energy medicine, such as reiki, and people who have tried energy medicine,” Ecker said. “I’ll be giving a hands-on session of polarity therapy and teach people an easy way to use it at home.”
Polarity therapy involves therapists attempting to restore balance and wholeness to patients using gentle touch to direct healing energy to specific areas of the body.
Ecker said benefits of polarity therapy include the “relief of chronic health issues, including arthritis, back pain, depression, headaches and digestive problems; strengthening the immune system and bringing mental and emotional clarity to a troubling issue.”
She said she enjoys teaching people about polarity therapy and other energy medicines because they help improve health in a “chem-free” way.
“People don’t realize that energy medicine has been around longer than our contemporary medicines,” Ecker said.
The program is free and open to the public.
