FRYEBURG — The 33rd Asbury Short Film Concert, New York City’s longest-running shorts exhibition, will return to The Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center on Friday night, Nov. 21. The first film hits the screen at 7:30 p.m. Host will be Brenda Bonneville, editor of The Main Arts Scene Magazine. Live music will be provided by Mount Washington Valley-based, folk rock band Junco.

The Asbury Shorts “concert” combines classic world-renowned films with new festival honorees, providing a rare opportunity for attendees to see elite, international selections on a real cinema screen rather than a computer or iPad. Academy Award-nominated director Jason Reitman (“JUNO,” “Up in the Air,” “Thank You for Smoking” and “Young Adult”) calls Asbury Shorts: “The best short film show I’ve ever seen.”

Highlights of the show include:

“A Poet Long Ago” from acclaimed feature film and TV commercial director Bob Giraldi and written by famed author Pete Hamill. Steve Schirripa (HBO’s “The Sopranos”) and Boris McGiver (Netflix: “House of Cards,”) star as former grammar school classmates who meet by chance and reminisce about their younger days in Brooklyn opening up some old wounds. The film recently won “Best Narrative Short Film” at the 12th Garden State Film Festival.

“Globe Trot” from renowned independent filmmaker Mitchell Rose. An incredible international crowd-sourced dance piece, the film recently won the “Audience Award” at World Fest in Houston. 50 dancers / 23 countries / 1 dance!

“Local Commercial”– John Ratzenberger (“Cliff” on the NBC TV series “Cheers”) is the owner of a law firm who hires a veteran movie director to create a new television commercial for his company. Filmmaker Richard Dobbs has helmed episodes of the NBC TV series “Law & Order,” Dobbs won “Best Director” for this film at The Boston Film Festival.

The LHE/PAC is at 18 Bradley Street. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students. For all show/event information and directions, call 207-935-9232 or email boxoffice@fryeburgacademy.org.
