Central Maine Power reported that a squirrel got into a substation shortly before noon. The squirrel “got into some energized equipment and he became part of the path to ground,” according to CMP.
They were able to restore power at about 1:45 p.m. At one point, CMP reported more than 6,300 customers were without power.
Lewiston School Superintendent Bill Webster said Longley, Farwell, Montello and Lewiston High schools lost power but all schools would have regular dismissal.
