I am a Lisbon High School graduate and a former football player for four years. Not a very good one, I’ll admit, as blocking was my greatest asset.
In my day, Coach Woodhead got a scrimmage with Lewiston’s three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust offense of Norm Parent. Riding on the bus to face “the big guys,” to say we were apprehensive about playing them would be a gigantic understatement. Lo and behold, both teams won championships that year.
We beat Lewiston because we had the greatest running back in Lisbon’s football history, a guy named Felix Small.
Everyone has their own opinions and here is mine about Telstar’s forfeit against Lisbon. This comes after re-reading the column (Oct. 29) on the Sun Journal sports page.
To even suggest that Telstar made the wrong decision is a joke.
I credit the Telstar community for making the best decision for the safety and welfare of their kids, especially in the concussion era.
I have the utmost respect for Coach Mynahan and his staff as one of the best in the state. He and his staff would know best if a week of rest and regrouping is for the best or not. The game would have been David (without a slingshot) against Goliath.
Who would benefit? Surely, not Telstar.
Hopefully, those who make decisions next year about the playoff format will seek a four-team playoff. Maybe Sacopee Valley and Telstar should re-group for a few years.
Were the Telstar players scared of playing a very good team? If they weren’t, they should have been. But being referred to as quitters is ludicrous.
Very intelligent would better describe the Telstar community.
