“Nature can be vicious, especially during the rutt,” said David Dow of Buckfield after coming back from hunting Wednesday. While he never fired a shot, he returned from one of his favorite spots with a different kind of trophy.
Paddling down the Nezinscot River from his home for a few hours of hunting late in the afternoon, he noticed something floating in the river in the area he planned to go ashore. He recognized the body of a deer, but upon closer inspection it was actually two bucks with their antlers entwined. Each of the deer were close to 200 pounds.
He tied a rope on them and paddled back to his house, then hooked the rope to his four-wheeler and dragged them onto shore. “You couldn’t believe how heavy they were,” Dow said.
Not knowing quite what to do with them, he has contacted a well-known hunting outfitter that is interested in mounting and displaying them.
