AUBURN — In partnership with the Camden Conference, the Auburn Public Library will present an interactive two-day event on the traditional art of the Russian nesting doll.
Marina Forbes , a native of St. Petersburg, Russia, will be at the library on Dec. 5 and 6.
Forbes has been an active artist, historian, storyteller, lecturer and teacher in the area of Russian art, culture, language and folklore, offering more than 75 workshops, courses, and presentations each year both in Russia and throughout the New England area.
At 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, Forbes will present the “History of the Russian Nesting Doll from Russia to New England.” Using a fully illustrated show and numerous exhibits, including examples of her own work and from her extensive collection, Forbes will examine the tapestry of the rich folk tradition and symbolism of the doll’s appearance and the interesting link between doll making and other traditional Russian art forms.
Forbes returns at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, to lead a Russian nesting doll workshop and storytime at which participants can paint their own doll for themselves or for someone special this holiday season.
This unique workshop provides a wonderful opportunity for families with children (age 6 and up), teens and adults to learn about the rich folk tradition of Russian Matryoshka (wooden nesting doll) making and to create a finished piece of authentic Russian folk art on wood.
Participants will hear the story of the Matryoshka doll and will learn about her traditional Russian dress and customs. Traditional Russian painting techniques and floral and berry designs will also be introduced. Throughout the workshop, students will listen to traditional Russian music, and there will be a demonstration of a few steps from a traditional Russian “matryoshka dance.”
After the storytelling presentation, there will be an optional “hands-on” component where anyone who chooses to participate can paint an authentic Russian wooden doll. Dolls must be purchased.
