While work on the Manufacturers Bank building, Lisbon and Ash streets, is not entirely completed, the interior fittings and decorations are rushed and within a few weeks every office will be ready for occupation. The new edifice is practically at the center of the business section of the two cities. Looking from its roof in either direction, the business blocks and houses stretch out for about an equal distance on either side. The building is as fireproof as modern building science can make it. Concrete and steel, with brick front, form the principal items in its construction. Windows are of plate glass, set in special metal casings that make them waterproof.
50 years ago, 1964
Police officials in Lewiston and Auburn reported Tuesday night the youthful fad of “sidewalk surfing” is not now a problem in the Twin Cities. Sidewalk surfboards, built by attaching roller skates to the bottom of a couple of wooden boards, have become a problem in the Greater Portland area, to the extent that city council action had to be taken on the issue at a meeting this week. In Lewiston, Police Capt. John Harkins said Tuesday night that his department received only two complaints on this type of activity and both of these were about two months ago. In both instances, police confiscated the boards and brought the matter to the attention of parents.

Children of all ages are invited to greet Santa Claus when he arrives at the Auburn Mall for the holiday season this morning. Santa will arrive at the mall entrance by hay wagon at 10 a.m. All those present will be invited to take a free hayride until 1 p.m. The hayrides will take place in the Porteous parking lot, near the Turner Street entrance. Santa will then move to his temporary house in the center court of the mall.
