PORTLAND — The third annual induction ceremony for the University of Southern Maine’s chapter of Kappa Alpha Omicron was held on Oct. 29 in the Glickman Family Library on the Portland campus. Thirteen students were inducted based on their academic achievement in a ceremony attended by faculty, families and friends.

KAO is the international honor society in interdisciplinary environmental science and studies. USM has the only chapter of KAO in northern New England.

During the ceremony, USM President David Flanagan congratulated the students, saying, “I learned early in my career about the value of preserving Maine’s environment.” Flanagan has served as a board chair and campaign co-chair for the Nature Conservancy’s Maine Chapter.

The newly-inducted students were either environmental science or environmental planning and policy majors. Local inductees are:

Casco: Kassandra Girard, environmental science major.

Dixfield: Caleb Turner, environmental science major.
