Many changes have taken place in the appearance of that section of Lewiston bounded by Main, Canal and Chestnut streets and the tracks of the Maine Central railroad during the past three years. The biggest of these is the monster new weave shed of the Bates Mill corporation. It rises up and stretches itself over a vast amount of territory. so that folks who used to take a short cut, from Lisbon street to the Main street station via Ash street and the private way are now forced to go around.

Lewiston and Auburn police last night co-operated in removing an automobile reported stolen in Lewiston early Thursday evening from the brink of an abandoned quarry on Mt. Apatite in Auburn. According to authorities, whoever took the vehicle went into Auburn and traveled down the Garfield Road when they proceeded along a narrow “old woods road” to the quarry’s edge. The occupants rolled down all windows in the vehicle and opened the doors and then proceeded to undertake the task of pushing the car into the quarry, which is about 50 feet deep. As the front wheels of the car went off the quarry’s edge, police said the bottom of the auto apparently got caught and they were unsuccessful in their bid to submerge the auto. Authorities reported that a bumper jack, which was found still at the rear of the vehicle, had been used in an attempt to lift the auto to permit it to slide over the rock and down into the quarry.

A policy that denies bus rides to a quarter of Auburn’s elementary students will not be enforced next week as planned, according to Assistant Superintendent Tim McCormack, who listened to about 80 angry parents for nearly three hours Monday before deciding to postpone it. “We need to make sure those kids are safe,” said McCormack, who worked with other School Department administrators to revise elementary bus routes and enforce the 8-year-old policy, long unenforced, in an effort to relieve chronically crowded buses.
