JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Lance Cpl. Samuel Robert Penney of Oxford finished his basic training at Parris Island, S.C. on July 25.

He was the honor graduate of the Charlie Company 1053 and also led his platoon as the guidon bearer. He was promoted to private first class for his achievements.

He then went on the Camp Geiger in North Carolina for infantry training and graduated there on Oct. 16.

Out of 170 men in Bravo Company, he was again awarded the honor graduate and was promoted to lance corporal on graduation day.

Penney graduated from Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. He played baseball and soccer.

He is the son of Debra Penney of Oxford and Scott Penney of Mechanic Falls.

His two sisters, Anne and Jessica, have put in countless hours supporting him through his journey. They both reside in North Carolina.

He is a Marine reservist and will drill out of Brunswick.
