Recently the main care of George A. Allen, agent for the prevention of cruelty to animals, in his work of this sort has been in regard to the leaving by the owners of cows in pasture during this cold weather to subsist as best they can. Two food baskets, complete with turkey and all the fixings, were turned over to Auburn police today for distribution to two needy families in the Shoe City. The baskets were left at the police station, according to Sgt. Frank Keene, by several members of the Theta Pi Sorority of the Auburn Maine School of Commerce. Sgt. Keene said the students asked that the baskets, extremely well stocked with foodstuffs, be given to needy families by the department. Selection of the families to receive the baskets was made by police and Auburn Health Officer Shirley D. Schneider.

A record number of participants is expected in the up-coming Lewiston-Auburn Christmas Bird Count, organizers said Thursday. “It’s been growing each year,” said count coordinator Marsha Haines of Auburn. “This year is the 90th in the series of counts organized by the National Audubon Society, and it’s gotten a lot of attention. We expect more participants than ever.” Although more people will be counting, Haines said it will be difficult for the count to top its record of 45 bird species set in the warm winter of 1987.
