JAY — Steve McCourt, chairman of the Selectboard, thanked police Sgt. Troy Young on Monday night for his years of service to the town.
Young has accepted a job as a deputy at the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department in Auburn, McCourt said. Young was not at the board meeting.
The town will go through a promotion and hiring process for the sergeant’s position and for the vacant detective position previously held by Richard Caton IV. Caton was promoted to chief this month.
The detective position will be filled first, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said.
Young of Livermore Falls started his career in law enforcement as a corrections officer for Androscoggin County shortly after graduating from Southern Maine Community College with an associate degree in law enforcement.
He began serving Jay as a reserve patrol officer in 1999. He was hired full time in 2004 and graduated from the ninth Basic Law Enforcement Training Program in 2005. In 2007, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.
Young said Tuesday night that he will begin his new duties with Androscoggin County on Monday, Dec. 1.
