NEWRY — The Newry Withdrawal Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in the Town Office. The meeting is open to the public.
According to Chairman Jim Sysko, the committee is charged with “creating a plan that will be an improvement for our kids.” Newry voters decide whether to approve withdrawing from School Administrative District 44, he said.
“Money is the secondary issue here, at least in my mind,” Sysko said.
The committee was formed after Newry voters decided Sept. 24 to continue the multistep withdrawal process. Other towns in the district are Bethel, Greenwood, Woodstock and Andover.
Andover residents also voted Sept. 24 to leave the district, but the town will not officially be out until June 30, 2015.
Newry’s withdrawal process began after Sysko circulated a petition, citing the large amount of money Newry pays to SAD 44 and the quality of education their students receive.
Newry currently pays the district $2.93 million for this fiscal year and has about 25 students attending SAD 44 schools.
