LEWISTON — As part of College for ME-Androscoggin’s annual College Day on Friday, anyone wearing clothing with a college logo can receive free coffee from one of almost a dozen local cafes, bakeries and restaurants.

Participating vendors include Cumberland Farms, Starbucks, Forage Market, Guthries, The Library Café, Rolly’s Diner, The Italian Bakery, The Cupcakery, Grant’s Bakery and Café LA at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston Auburn College, according to College for ME-Androscoggin spokeswoman Joan Macri.

Health care workers who can’t wear college garb can get stickers at one of several locations: St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, Central Maine Medical Center, Auburn Hall, Lewiston City Hall, Auburn Public Library, Lewiston Public Library and the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce.

Also preparing for Friday’s College Day, College for ME-Androscoggin is distributing small rocks painted bright blue with the message “College Rocks!” with the organization’s Web address to area businesses and schools.

The rocks will rest on counters and by cash registers so as many people as possible see them and think about taking the next step toward college.

The free coffee and college rocks coincide with the ninth annual awards luncheon, at which college students who have overcome challenges, student advocates and corporate leaders will be honored.

The mission of College for ME-Androscoggin is to increase the number of degree holders in Androscoggin County.

College for ME-Androscoggin provides career and college counseling for adults, helps teens take tuition-free early college courses while in high school and enables multiple generations in families to focus on accessing and succeeding in college. The organization also provides professional development for guidance counselors and works with businesses interested in furthering employee education.
