OTISFIELD — The smell of roasting turkey will be wafting through the corridors of the Otisfield Community School on Friday afternoon as the school staff begins preparations for the annual Christmas community dinner followed by the lighting of the town’s Christmas tree on Saturday, Dec. 13.

“It’s a great way to get the families together,” Barbara Maguire, head custodian at the school, said. She, along with the rest of the school staff, will donate food and cook the annual dinner, which is a fundraiser for student field trips and other unbudgeted academic activities.

The Christmas dinner will be held in the Otisfield Community School cafeteria at 416 Powhatan Road from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The ceremonial lighting of the Lisa Bean Thurston Memorial Christmas Tree will take place in front of the Town Office at 403 State Route 121 beginning at 7 p.m. The ceremony will be followed by a visit with Santa, as well as cocoa and goodies in the Town Office annex.

The dinner will include 10 turkeys that are at least 15 pounds each; 100 pounds of potatoes; a bushel of squash; 15 pounds of frozen corn; 15 dozen rolls and 30 pies, including pumpkin, apple and chocolate cream, “the type the kids like,” Maguire said.

The cost of the dinner is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for children ages 3 to 10. Children younger than 3 are free.

The dinner will include performances by students at each grade level and a community sing-along, Maguire said.

Following dinner, people will be encouraged to go to the Town Office, where a tree-lighting ceremony and visit with Santa will take place at 7 p.m.
