100 years ago, 1914
Principal Moulton of the Edward Little high school, Auburn, yesterday morning addressed the students on school spirit and late dancing. He encouraged a clean spirit of enthusiasm but announced that dancing after the basketball games must, in the future, not continue later than 10:30 P.M. Next Wednesday night is to be “parents night,” and all parents are invited to be present in Auburn hall, that they may see for themselves the manner in which the games and dances are conducted.

50 years ago, 1964
A freezing rain and mist, which encased the Twin Cities and surrounding area in a frosting of ice, caused extremely hazardous driving conditions throughout the area for a few hours Friday, brought on a rash of accidents and taxed police agencies and highway crews to the limit. Traffic tie-ups resulting from the slippery conditions plagued some sections of the Twin City area, and reports of cars sliding off the highway were common. Auburn police did nothing but investigate motor vehicle accidents for almost four hours, but in the same period of time fate looked kindly on Lewiston, and police in the Textile City reported only two accidents while the rain glazed the streets.

25 years ago, 1989
Lewiston teachers working to boost Maine Education Assessment scores at the city’s high school told School Committee officials Monday that they’re concerned by the number of hours students are devoting to paying jobs. Juniors working eight to 26 hours per week or more outside school last year performed markedly worse on the statewide exam than students who did not hold jobs, Lewiston High School Principal Richard Sykes said. Others said general attitudes about education, as well as elevating self-esteem, must be considered in order to raise Lewiston’s scores, which fell below the state average in every subject on last year’s exam.
