100 years ago, 1914
The Auburn police found a brown mare hitched to a tree at the junction of School and Union streets at about six o’clock yesterday morning and took it to the A. B. Howard livery stable. The horse was so cold when found that it could hardly move its legs. Apparently it had been tied to the tree all night without any blanket. Late Monday night the proprietor of a livery stable at 72 Park street reported the loss of a horse to the Lewiston police. He stated that it had been hired by a young man who said he wanted to go out into the country a few miles to visit some relatives. The animal which had been found on School street was the missing one.
50 years ago, 1964
The Lewiston-Auburn joint Airport Committee met this afternoon to open bids on a new radio beacon transmitter for the local municipal airport but declined to make an immediate decision. The new radio beacon equipment was due to be installed by the first of the year because of new federal requirements, but an extension has been obtained by the cities.
25 years ago, 1989
A small Lisbon Street restaurant has had to shut down for the second time in three weeks because fire struck an otherwise vacant apartment building at 18 Maple St., Lewiston, Friday night. Pop’s Place, located on the first floor of the building at Lisbon and Maple streets, sustained extensive water damage, according to Fire Chief Richard Mailhot. He said approximately eight vacant apartments at the rear of the building, over the kitchen, were destroyed by the fire. The restaurant recently re-opened after sustaining water damage in the kitchen area during a much smaller Nov. 22 fire that also damaged a second-floor apartment.
