LEWISTON — City councilors will meet with the city’s legislative delegates at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, in the City Council Chamber.
Postponed because of a snowstorm Dec. 9, the meeting is to discuss state policy issues that affect Maine cities, especially Lewiston.
According to a meeting agenda, councilors are scheduled to press legislators to restore sales and income taxes and other revenue that had been shared with Maine cities and towns, have the state take responsibility for General Assistance, and push for local sales taxes and for fees that could be charged to nonprofit groups.
Lewiston officials would also like more authority to deal with abandoned and vacant properties, incentives to work with other municipalities and to have the Maine Turnpike Authority pay storm-water fees to the city. According to the memo, the authority pays storm-water fees to Bangor and Portland but Lewiston was exempted by legislators in 2007.
