LEWISTON — As school was dismissed Dec. 19 for the Christmas break, the Farwell Elementary School community distributed money, food and gifts for needy families.
Because of help from staff, led by school nurse LuAnn Frenette, and donations from Farwell faculty, parents and friends, “I’m very proud to say we were able to provide a little bit of Christmas cheer for 91 children,” Principal Althea Walker said.
In some cases older and younger siblings of Farwell students received help. Many people and groups contributed, Walker said. “It was amazing; as the lists kept growing, so did the donations.”
Students received something from a “need” and a “want” category, including ski pants, boots and mittens, undergarments, socks, diapers, clothing, school and art supplies, Legos and “Frozen” toys.
Staff helped out by holding holiday parties to allow friends to donate a toy or needed item. Faculty members also did a lot of wrapping and drove for hours to deliver donated items.
Also, snack packs were prepared for 45 students from homes that lack food to have during the two-week break.
Farwell teachers and staff understand that some students aren’t able to focus on lessons because they are hungry or worried they won’t have even one Christmas gift “under an imaginary tree,” Walker said. “Everyone at Farwell is thankful to the support we have received as we recognize the needs of the whole child.”
Schools in Lewiston and Auburn will reopen on Jan. 5.
