PORTLAND (AP) — Officials at Fairpoint Communications say two acts of vandalism New Year’s Day affected about 1,000 customers.

Spokeswoman Angelynne Beaudry says the vandalism occurred in Amherst, New Hampshire and Harrington, Maine.

She said Friday that in both cases, the damage was done by those who know telecommunications equipment and how to damage the network.

Company officials Friday renewed their offer of a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the vandals.

Union officials have said the company is struggling to maintain its own systems and accused FairPoint of making “bogus insinuations.”

More than 1,700 FairPoint Communications workers in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont went on strike Oct. 17.
