1931 – 2014
CANTON — Norman “Champ” Barre, 83, of Penobscot Street in Rumford passed away Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the Victorian Villa, following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Rumford on May 20, 1931, a son of Albert J. and Rosa (Grenier) Barre. Champ was educated in Rumford schools and lived locally all of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in the Medical Corp.
He was employed for 42 years at the Rumford Paper Mill.
Champ was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior and was an avid volunteer in the parish.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Lorraine Barre, of Rumford; two children, Cynthia A. Barre of South Gardiner and Mark R. Barre of Lake Wales, Fla.; a sister, Anita Child and husband, Gene, of Dixfield; a brother, Emile Barre, of Rumford; a special family friend, Amy LeGasse, of South Gardiner; and a grandson, Corey D. Richard, of New Sharon.
He was predeceased by his parents; three sisters, Alberta Barre, Cecile Galarneau and Dolores MacDonald; and a brother, Albert Barre.
