CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Police said a tracking dog helped them find a woman whose car rolled over on Route 27 just before 2 a.m. Wednesday.
She apparently was disoriented and walked away from the accident, they said.
Courtney Steeves, 36, of Salem was driving a 2013 Subaru Forester south on Route 27 when it went off the road, hitting a snowbank and partially landing on a guardrail, Carrabassett Valley police Chief Mark Lopez said.
The car slid quite a ways down the guardrail before it rolled over and ended up in the northbound lane near Spring Farm, Lopez said. When police and a NorthStar ambulance arrived, no one was near the car, he said.
Cpl. Nathan Bean of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and his dog, Diesel, were called to help find her, Lopez said.
Steeves walked around the area of Spring Farm. She texted her employer that she had rolled her vehicle and wasn’t sure where she was, he said. Homeowners heard a noise and found Steeves in their yard. They brought her into their home just as the dog tracked her to the site.
She was found at 3:35 a.m. after spending about 90 minutes wandering in the cold, he said.
Steeves apparently hit her head and had a cut on her hand, but refused medical treatment.
Police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the accident, he said.
The vehicle had extensive damage.
