There will be an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, with artist talks from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Admisttion to the reception is free and open to the public.

The exhibition includes sculpture, installation, digital works, painting, prints, and ceramic pieces by 10 USM art faculty and 10 alumni with whom the faculty have chosen to exhibit.

“In the past we have presented separate exhibitions of faculty works and alumni works, but this year, we are showcasing some of our most outstanding alumni and their evolving relations with faculty,” said Carolyn Eyler, USM director of exhibitions and programming. “This special theme has created an energy and excitement that will be apparent by the connections as well as the superb work in the gallery.”

Eyler noted that seven faculty-alumni pairs are exhibiting their individual works, and three pairs collaborated on new works for the exhibition.

“The collegial dynamic is especially evident in the three faculty-alumni collaborations as well as the affinity in each pair’s individual work,” Eyler said.

Exhibiting faculty and alumni include:

? Damir Porobic, full-time lecturer of printmaking, and Johnathan Cook, USM class of 2011;

? David Schneider, part-time lecturer of art, and Benjamin Lambert, USM class of 2010;

? Michael Shaughnessy, professor of sculpture, and Aaron Frederick, USM class of 1999;

? Richard Wilson, part-time lecturer of art, and Scott Minzy, USM class of 2006.

Shaughnessy and Frederick collaborated on an installation based on a yurt, titled “Imbolc Hut,” which invites gallery visitors to enter the structure and make their own marks.

“Each of us has explored making an art form out of journeying; myself with a transcontinental voyage and the conspicuous Hay Ball, and Aaron with an eastern coast kayak trip, development of Cow Island for educational expeditions, and a recent year-long global pilgrimage,” said Shaughnessy. “This piece encourages a dialogue between visitors and for them to examine the nuances and roles of art-as-object and art-as-experience.”

The exhibition also includes 15 collaborative artist’s books from the Ant Farm collection, which was exhibited at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College during the spring of 2014, featuring works that Goodale created along with fellow Ant Girls, Dorothy Schwartz, Vivien Russe, and Colleen Kinsella.
