AUBURN — City Councilor Leroy Walker was arrested Saturday night at the New Auburn Social Club and charged with assault, police said.
According to Auburn police Deputy Chief Jason Moen, officers were called around 11 p.m. for reports of a disturbance at the club at 7 Second St. They reported Walker, 65, of 41 Broad St., was in an altercation with Frederick Leonard Mitchell, 30, of 33 Dewey St. in Auburn, Moen said.
Walker was charged with assaulting a female bystander and refusing to sign a criminal summons. He was booked at the Androscoggin County Jail.
Mitchell was charged with assaulting Walker and issued a summons, Moen said.
He said alcohol was a factor in the incident.
Walker told the Sun Journal on Monday evening he refused to sign the summons because he’s innocent.
“Why would I sign something admitting to something when I didn’t do it?” he asked.
Moen said the incident remains under investigation.
Walker said the entire situation amounted to a misunderstanding. He said he was having a disagreement with another man but declined further comment until he talked with police.
“I can’t say anything until I see what they have written in the report,” Walker said. “This will probably go to court, but if we can settle out before it gets to court, we will.”
Walker was elected in 2011 to the Ward 5 seat representing New Auburn.
