JAY — Selectpersons agreed Monday to approve a policy to allow taxpayers to use credit cards to pay foreclosed property taxes and sewer bills.
Under the former policy, the town only accepted cash or money orders. The town also accepted bank checks, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said.
“We will not accept personal checks or debit cards within 45 days prior to foreclosure,” she said. Debit cards are similar to checks, in that the transition could be sent back for insufficient funds, she said.
“While a credit card transaction can also be disputed, the town will have the signature of the cardholder, making it very difficult to dispute,” she said.
The majority of the select board approved the use of credit cards to pay for town services in February 2014.
