1943 – 2015

AUGUSTA — John N. McCarthy, 71, of Strong, died and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at MaineGeneral Medical Center.

John was born on Sept. 14, 1943, a son of John and Catherine (Sprague) McCarthy. He grew up in northern Maine and enrolled in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving his country for four years. Upon his discharge from the Navy, John moved to Connecticut, where he began his job working as an elevator mechanic.

He married the love of his life, Barbara Apuzzo, in East Haven, Conn., on Nov. 19, 1971.

John was a calm man with an extraordinary sense of humor. He enjoyed camping and jigsaw puzzles, and watching the Yankees and NASCAR, rooting for Jeff Gordon. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 78 of Strong and enjoyed riding ATVs with the Sandy River Riders club.

John was an animal lover and had a special place in his heart for his chocolate Lab, Dempsey. John was a generous man who loved everyone he came to know; he will certainly be missed.

John is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Barbara McCarthy, of Strong; a daughter, Lori Ann Sholler and her husband, James, of Summerville, S.C.; a sister, Virginia Beyerle, of Oregon; a brother, Michael McCarthy, of Clinton; grandchildren, Andrew Sholler of Bangor and Jordan Lynn Hartin of South Carolina; and several special nieces and nephews.
