NORTH BERWICK (AP) — Maine Democrats are beginning a statewide “jobs tour” where they’re discussing ways to create jobs and to grow the state’s economy.

House Speaker Mark Eves and other lawmakers launched the effort Wednesday at Pratt & Whitney’s manufacturing facility in North Berwick.

Eves said the goal is to invest $5 million over five years in at least 10 public-private regional partnerships like the one between York County Community College and Pratt & Whitney and several other businesses.

Eves says a precision machinist program is filling 1,200 new jobs with the help of $330,000 in state funds. Eves called such investments a “down payment on growing the middle class.”

Any proposals introduced by Democrats will also need support from Republicans, who now control the Senate as well as the Blaine House.
