FARMINGTON — Franklin County deputies charged a former Farmington man  Monday with sexually assaulting a child less than 18 years old five years ago in Franklin County, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said Tuesday.

Shawn Flagg, 39, of Stetson, was arrested on a felony charge of gross sexual assault, he said.

Deputies received a referral from another law enforcement agency requesting the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office investigate an incident that occurred five years ago, Nichols said. Lt. David St. Laurent and Detective Ken Charles went to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor where Flagg was being held on unrelated charges. After the interview, Flagg was charged in the Franklin County case.

A conviction on the charge carries up to 30 years in prison and a maximum $50,000 fine.

Flagg is being held on $10,000 cash bail on the Franklin County incident, Nichols said.

He will be transported to Franklin County jail in Farmington and make his initial appearance, Nichols said.
