JAY — The town’s Board of Assessment Review will meet at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at the Town Office to determine whether Verso Androscoggin’s appeal application for a 2013 tax abatement is acceptable for processing.
Verso has appealed the abatement of $829,258. Selectpersons voted Jan. 6 to reduce the valuation for that year from $815.4 million to $591.9 million and to grant the abatement. The company had filed an abatement application in February 2014 requesting a reduction of $469 million in valuation.
Verso claims that the abatement granted is manifestly wrong and unlawful. The company maintains that the mill and its properties should be valued at $460 million.
“Our ordinance requires the Board (of Assessment Review) to determine if the application is acceptable for processing within 10 days of receipt of the application,” Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said. “Since we received it on Friday (Jan. 23), they need to take action by Monday.”
The board will elect officers during the meeting prior to reviewing the appeal application.
