LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen began work the 2015-16 municipal budget Tuesday night with a discussion on public works and recycling needs.

Public works foreman Bill Nichols requested a part-time position to assist at the transfer station on Saturdays at an estimated cost of $4,600. If approved, it would increase the recycling budget to $114,600.

He said Saturdays are extremely busy. For safety reasons, he said, an additional person would be a benefit.

For public works, he requested an increase for diesel fuel of $6,675, bringing the proposed total to $359,350. Also, requests were made to replace a 1998 GMC plow truck and a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck.

The board will work through each of the cost centers over the next few weeks.

Also on Tuesday, the board appointed Ashley Chase to the Budget Committee until June. Town Manager Kristal Flagg said at least one more resident must be appointed to the committee.

The current municipal budget is $2.24 million, about $5,000 less than the previous fiscal year.

The board also set a meeting of the Sewer Committee with the Jay Sewer Committee for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Jay Town Office. Livermore Falls Selectmen Louise Chabot and Ron Chadwick are also on the sewer committee.

Selectmen are again in search of the town’s eldest resident to accept the Boston Post Cane plaque. The previous person passed before the plaque was presented to him.

So far, Flagg has identified a woman who was born in 1918. If anyone knows of an older resident, they should contact the Town Office at 897-3321.

Flagg told the board that a member of the Livermore Falls Police Department went above and beyond the call of duty during the recent snowstorms. The officer was not named, but she said he bought a shovel and helped several residents who were having difficulty clearing their walkways or driveways.
