DIXFIELD — The Board of Selectmen will decide at Monday evening’s meeting whether to support a proposal to apply a new name to a Dixfield summit, Town Manager Carlo Puiia said Friday.
The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Ludden Memorial Library.
Puiia said that resident Steve Swan submitted a proposal to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to change the name of a small, 1,329-foot summit in Dixfield from Pauls Bluff to Swan Hill.
“Steve said that the proposed name was in honor of his father, Stanley Stuart “Sonny” Swan Jr., who served as a town official in the 1960s,” Puiia said. “I’ve been emailing back and forth with someone from that board who said the Dixfield Board of Selectmen has the opportunity to either approve, reject or remain neutral to the proposal.”
In an email to Puiia, Matt O’Donnell, a contractor with the U.S. Board of Geographic Names, said that the Maine State Name Authority had no issue with the proposal, and that they found no competing names.
“I think the whole thing is sort of a formality, and that the U.S. Board of Geographic Names is giving the town of Dixfield a chance to weigh in on the whole thing,” Puiia said.
O’Donnell’s email said that Swan and other members of the Swan family live on Swan Avenue, located on the southeast edge of the summit.
Other items to be addressed at Monday’s meeting include:
* A request to adopt meter and pipe specifications for the Dixfield Water Department.
* Continued discussion on Wind Energy Facility Ordinance.
* A request for a temporary service variance of sewer for 22 Fairbanks Ave.
* Discussion on Police Department operations.
