BRIDGTON — Join Loon Echo Land Trust Stewardship Manager Jon Evans for a snowshoe hike at LELT’s newest preserve, Perley Pond-Northwest River, at 9 a.m. Saturday Feb. 14, as part of the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend.
The 150 acres of forest and wetland protect rich water resources and provide diverse habitat for many species including two rare damselflies. The preserve also contains a unique pitch pine bog. The property includes the majority of Perley Pond, a 24-acre undeveloped, shallow pond that supports a variety of warm water fish species. The property also includes 2,000 feet along the Northwest River, a major tributary to Sebago Lake, the drinking water supply for 200,000 residents in southern Maine.
The preserve is located on Folly Road in Sebago, which needs to be accessed from Route 114 in winter. To get to the preserve, take Route 302 to Naples. Turn onto Route 114 south for 7 miles and look for Folly Road on the right, opposite Nason’s Beach. Continue on Folly Road for 2.5 miles to Perley Pond on the left. Loon Echo staff will meet you there. Parking will be along the road.
Dress in layers as this hike will be moderate-strenuous, and will last approximately two hours. Snowshoes required. Water and snacks are recommended.
