AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine panel that has been studying higher education affordability issues wants the state to boost a grant program that helps students pay for college.
Among the recommendations the group outlined on Wednesday is to raise the Maine State Grant Program from $1,000 to $2,500 per year. The grant would increase by $250 each year as an incentive to help them finish their education.
The panel, which includes lawmakers, students and higher education officials, says the state should also make available a list of average class fees by major at the colleges and universities. It also is encouraging the state to fully fund colleges and universities so they don’t have to raise tuition.
The Education and Cultural Affairs Committee will now consider the report.
