CARATUNK — A Connecticut man died Saturday afternoon while snowmobiling in Somerset County.

Lars Otto, 46, of Danbury, Conn., was riding with another person when he apparently failed to negotiate a turn on Bald Mountain Loop Trail, according to Warden Lt. Kevin Adam.

Otto was riding a snowmobile behind the other rider who did not witness the accident, Adam said Sunday afternoon.

The accident happened around 2 p.m., Adam said. Otto’s sled left the trail, and it ended up on top of him. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the warden.

Excess speed, driving beyond his ability and unfamiliarity with the trail may have contributed to the accident, which remains under investigation, Adam said, adding it did not appear alcohol or drugs were factors.

Weather conditions were good at the time, and wardens were assisted at the scene by members of a local fire department.
