TOPSHAM — A Lisbon man has died, police said, as a result of injuries suffered when his vehicle collided with a garbage truck Feb. 9 on Route 196.

Christopher Wheeler, 48, died at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston earlier this week, police said. A family member said Wheeler had been driving to Bath Iron Works the morning of Feb. 9 when his vehicle slid on the snowy roadway and collided with an oncoming truck.

The crash occurred near the Lisbon-Topsham town line.

Wheeler and a passenger were taken to the Lewiston hospital after the crash, police said. The passenger survived his injuries. Wheeler remained in Intensive Care at CMMC until he died Tuesday night.

Wheeler was married and had a daughter and son, according to his obituary. He began working at BIW after serving four years in the U.S. Air Force.

While Wheeler remained hospitalized, a GoFundMe page was set up to raise money to assist his family. By early evening Thursday, nearly $6,000 had been donated.
